So, you dove in the deep end of your keto journey and you’ve been adhering to all the recommended guidelines.  A few days in you notice you don’t feel so well.  Maybe it’s just a slight ill feeling or maybe you feel you’ve been hit by a semi-truck.  This is known as the keto flu.  Not everyone experiences it but many do so you’re not alone.

Your body is going through major changes when you switch to the ketogenic way of eating.  It’s learning to use a new energy source for fuel and it’s flushing electrolytes in the process.  This is why you can feel sick during this time.  But you don’t have to suffer through it like it’s a rite of passage and please don’t give up.

There are various things people experience with the keto flu but here’s 5 of the most common side effects:

  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Constipation
  • Muscle Cramps
  • Brain Fog

To combat these ill feelings, you just need to get those electrolytes up and drink plenty of water.  These important electrolytes include sodium, potassium and magnesium.  You get some of this through the food you eat but that’s not always enough so you can supplement.

You can make your own electrolyte drink at home and if you’re not sure where to start Dr. Ken Berry has a great video recipe for “ketorade” that you can find on YouTube.  If you want something that’s easy when you’re on the go you can find many different electrolyte powders on the internet or in local stores just be sure to look at the ingredients to ensure they’re keto friendly without a lot of unnecessary additives.  Beef and chicken broths are also a great, easy way to help keep electrolytes up
